Television and Background Graphic Services: |
.Television graphics represent a unique subset of computer graphic arts. While many of us use the latest computer technology to capture, manipulate and composite the image data, we must be constantly aware of, and work within, the color-restrictions and pixel resolutions of a medium that was frozen in time in the 1950's !! Where most home computer systems now have image resolutions of 800 or 1000 horizontal pixels, the limitations of the broadcast transmission system mean that the "over-the-air" resolution that reaches the home is somewhere between 300 and 400 horizontal pixels. That means that many graphic elements that look great on the computer workstation become blurred and unreadable by the time they get through the television system. It is the responsibility of the graphics designer to use type faces, type sizes, and color schemes that will translate well into this lower-resolution universe. Beyond the daunting task of creating a "legal" NTSC-compatible image, we must also deal with a host of different television graphics storage equipments in use around the country, many with unique or proprietary image sizes and file formats. |
